How to write a milestone birthday speech

Milestone birthday speeches — 40th, 50th, 60th, 70th — are one of the few times we tell someone, out loud and in front of everyone, what they mean to us. Keep it light, keep it specific, and land on something heartfelt.

A structure that works

  1. A light opening — gentle age humour works, if it's affectionate.
  2. A story that captures them perfectly.
  3. What they mean to the people in the room.
  4. A toast to the next decade.

  • Know your audience — a 40th can take more teasing than an 80th.

Length

Two to four minutes. At a party, shorter is better — people want to get back to celebrating.

Frequently asked questions

Who gives the speech at a birthday party?

Usually a partner, best friend or grown-up child. Sometimes several people say a few words each.

Should a 50th birthday speech be funny?

Mostly, yes — but finish sincerely. The last minute is the part they'll remember.
