How to write an anniversary speech for your parents

A 25th, 40th or 50th anniversary is a celebration of a whole life built together — and as their child, you've had a front-row seat. The best anniversary speeches tell the story of the marriage through small, specific moments rather than a timeline of dates.

What to include

  1. How they met — the family legend, told briefly.
  2. What their marriage looked like from the inside — rituals, habits, the way they argue and make up.
  3. What they taught you about love and partnership.
  4. A toast to the years behind them and the ones ahead.

If siblings are speaking too

Coordinate. One option: each sibling takes a decade, or one tells the story and another gives the toast. A joint speech with alternating lines can be wonderful if rehearsed.

Length

Three to five minutes. Older relatives love the stories — but keep it moving.

Example opening

Fifty years ago, Mum told Dad she'd go on one date with him if he could beat her at pool. He lost. She went anyway. "I felt sorry for him," she says. Dad says she just wanted a lift home. Fifty years, three children and seven grandchildren later, they still argue about it every Christmas…

Frequently asked questions

How do I make an anniversary speech emotional without being sad?

Focus on what the marriage has created — family, traditions, stories — rather than on time passing.

Should I mention family members who have died?

A short, warm mention is usually welcome at milestone anniversaries. Check with your parents first.
