How to write a funny best man speech
The funniest best man speeches don't use jokes from the internet. They use true stories, told with good timing, about the groom being exactly who everyone knows he is. The room laughs because they recognise him — not because of a punchline.
Where the laughs actually come from
- Specific truth. "Marcus has never once arrived anywhere on time" is mild. "Marcus once arrived late to his own surprise party" is a laugh.
- The rule of three. List two normal things and a ridiculous third: "He's loyal, he's generous, and he still can't fold a fitted sheet."
- Self-deprecation. A joke at your own expense in the first minute relaxes the room and gives you permission to tease the groom later.
- Callbacks. Mention something early (his terrible sense of direction) and bring it back at the end ("Priya — he's finally found his way").
What not to joke about
- Exes, ever.
- The wedding cost, the bride's family, or anything that might start an argument in the car home.
- Stag-do stories. What happened there stays there.
- Anything that needs "you had to be there".
Land it sincerely
Even the funniest speech needs one sincere minute. After the laughs, slow down and say something true about the groom and why he and his partner work. That contrast is what makes the whole speech memorable.
Timing tips
- Pause after every punchline — count two seconds in your head.
- Don't laugh at your own jokes before you've finished them.
- If a joke dies, smile and move on. Never explain it.
Example opening
Good evening, everyone. For those who don't know me, I'm Dan, the best man — a title I've been told is "ceremonial" and "not a reflection of the groom's actual opinion."
Marcus and I have been friends for twenty years, which means I've seen him through three bad haircuts, two questionable cars, and one very long phase of wearing a fedora indoors…

How many jokes should a best man speech have?
Aim for a laugh roughly every 30–45 seconds in the first half, then let the second half get warmer.
Is it OK to roast the groom?
Gentle teasing, yes. A roast that makes the bride's grandparents wince, no.
